DJEHUTY

THE EYE OF HORUS SEES

The seen, and the unseen.

SCENE 1

ANSWER:

Humans are plantigrade: we walk heel to toe with the whole foot flat. The steps won't let us. Each step is shorter than the foot, so the heel has nowhere to land, and each one is taller than a normal stair. So the climber goes up on the balls of the feet with the heels lifted. The raised ankle sits high like a knee. The climber leans forward with the neck stretched out and reaches the step above with the fingertips, so four limbs carry the body and most of the weight rides up front. With every narrow step the center of balance zigzags from side to side. You become the giraffe. The giraffe's high "knee" is really its ankle. As it walks, its center of balance sways in the same zigzag. Ninety-one steps later, the human reaches the top perfectly balanced, having climbed Kukulcán as a giraffe.

SCENE 2

ANSWER:

"Line my lines with the temple," she says. Around the temple the path is too narrow. A giraffe on four legs doesn't fit. "I would fall," she says. So the giraffe borrows the human's plantigrade foot and walks heel to toe on two legs. like an Egyptian, one foot right in front of the other, as if on a rope. The giraffe walks like a human.

She could walk the 5 loops of the Venus rose around the temple. If she does, then out on the wide arcs the human walks like the giraffe, and in the loops the giraffe walks like the human. Giraffe helps human, and human helps giraffe.

But does she walk the rose?

SCENE 3

ANSWER:

At the top you sit over the temple, and you are thirsty. You drink like a giraffe and carry most of your weight on your front legs, which stand at 45.7° when you bend down to drink, almost exactly the stair's 45°. Your hooves make the support triangle. Because your back feet sit one step lower than your front feet, your body also makes a triangle, and the angle of that triangle comes from the elevation. There is a secret there.

Your neck bends at C7/T1, where the neck meets the back, and reaches down to the water hole on the south side, right over the cenote underneath.

A giraffe is at its most vulnerable while it drinks, with its head down and its legs spread. But someone is on the lookout.

What is her name?

"Be careful…" she warns.
